Research: Features Of A Music Video (Independent Work)

Indie Genre

Within this genre, there and linear and non-linear aspects regarding editing; the music video tends to tell a story with narrative elements however it also cuts back to the singer in order to capture the performance. Both narrative and performance are key features to an indie music video. The narrative enables the artist to reinforce their love for music and keep the audiences main focus on that. Additionally I have also noticed that the song is expressed through a visual way, often containing establishing shots and ariel shots of the landscape and are usually nature or urban orientated. As well as this, close ups and mid shots are common, when filming the artists singing. Moreover, editing in Indie music videos cut to the beat of the music, resulting in the video either being fast or slow paced depending on the tempo of the rhythm in the song. Regarding the use of the camera, movement is a prominent part of indie music videos. In order to convey particular moods, the camera moves in a certain way: still to create a calming atmosphere and slightly shaky to express either joy or uncertainty.

The costumes (an element of mise-en-scene) that are featured in the video usually consist of dark colours and clothes that are stereotypically seen as "cool"; this helps to reflect the relaxed environment of the indie music video. These locations appear laid-back because they are typical and not anything special, they are also usually linked to the song. Indie music videos also have low-key lighting making the video seem more mysterious. Props, another mise-en-scene element, are quite limited in order to present a chilled-back atmosphere unlike pop videos that show a lot of glammer making the artist look more prestige than the viewers - indie artists often appear more down to earth and normal. The fact that they don't have many props could also be due to the fact that indie artists usually have a low budget and cant make a large production music video. However, instruments are usually featured to express the artists love for music.
