Natural Light

Throughout the duration of filming my music video, I will be relying on natural light. Due to the unpredictability that natural lighting can bring, I want to try to control it as much as possible in order to get the desired effects on camera. To achieve this, I will sketch out settings from different scenes and evaluate where to position the subjects respective to the light source/s.

One of the main reasons that I chose the room situated below, for one of the past scenes, is due to the 3 natural light sources similar to a traditional three-point lighting set up. This arrangement is used to create high key lighting which creates a softly lit shot. I believe this to be idea for shooting the scenes from the past as it reflects a happier, love-filled atmosphere compared to low key, harsh lighting.

Dancing Scene - Past

For the indoor, present scenes, I restricted the amount of lighting available by limiting myself to rooms with only one light source. By having one key source of light, the lighting becomes alike with a low key lighting set up as they also only use one key light. This
chiaroscuro effect creates a dramatic ambience, makes the image more sinister and reflects the heartbreak and anger throughout the present scenes.

Fighting Scene - Present

Fighting Scene - Present
As well as this, I want to be able to control the lighting in a way in which I can use it symbolically. Within the fighting scene, I want there to be a point where the light source acts as back lighting, casting the whole of Ashley's body into shadows to reinforce the fact he isn't thinking straight and how, metaphorically and figuratively, he is blocking out the light with his anger and frustration.

Outcomes

I have now completed filming. Here are pictures from my music video showing the effects that I achieved through the placement of actors and by controlling the light sources.

By having three light sources, I was able to attain soft lighting making the shot a lot less dramatic and charged with a joyful atmosphere.

Here, I was able to achieve the silhouetted shot that I intended for. This worked out particularly well; the back lighting formed a crisp shadow that contrasted with the rest of the setting, emphasising upon the dramatic moment that just occurred.
